Bellator 173 / BAMMA28– The Straight Blast Gym connection
BellatorMMA are bringing their roadshow to the SSE Arena in Belfast this Friday night (Feb 24th 2017). This card has been be-set with problems from the get go, with half the original cast of fighters having had to withdraw for a variety of reasons. However there are still some interesting match-ups in the final line up and the full card for Saturday night’s event is:
Our main Interest in this card is to keep an eye on the 2 Straight Blast Gym Professionals bantamweight Sinead Kavanagh and Featherweight James Gallagher. Both fighters are coached by John Kavanagh and are now signed to fight with Bellator.
Sinead Kavanagh would be well known in Irish Boxing Circles and is an ex national champion. Coming from this pedigree she has two KO / TKO’s in her 4 professional fights and has come out the right side of 2 decisions. At 5’6” I’d consider Sinead slightly above average height for this class and she certainly packs a lot of power into a combative frame. Locally there would be a lot interest in how she fares in this contest and to see if her knock power transfers up with the step up in class at Bellator level. She had a unanimous decision in her favour on her debut at Bellator 169 against Elina Kallionidou , an 18 year old Greek fighter, on a 5 win streak as a professional.
James Gallagher is a 20 year old professional who is on an unbeaten 5 Win streak since he moved to the professional ranks. I’ve read a few Conor McGregor comparisons but other than the fact that he is currently fighting as a Featherweight – there are not too many similiairities in style. James has finished 4 of his 5 pro fights inside the distance, significantly all of them have been via submission.
Both Sinead and James fought together on the Bellator 169 card and both recorded victories and they will be hoping the same will occur here in Belfast on Saturday night as they would be highly regarded with the John Kavanagh SBG stable of fighters.
